Matrix.io is is probably the most promising communication protocol of all time (like every other communication protocol born before it, for that matter).
Features:
- multi-server, decentralized, federated, encrypted, libre server, libre clients
- groups with encryption by default
- lot of nice native clients for desktop (my favorite is Element.io)
- native bridge with IRC
- native transparent bridge with Slack (!) (← it always has been our best competitor ihih - https://phacility.com/phabricator/)
